International Women’s Day 2024

International Women's Day 2024

This International Women’s Day (IWD), we’re taking the opportunity to put the spotlight on some of the incredible leaders and role models within our business. With women making up over 80% of our workforce, we are proud to be a business that invests in women. We asked some of the trailblazing women at Accelagen; Anzari Atik – Senior Regulatory Affairs Associate, Sarah Henderson – Head of Regulatory Affairs and Quality, Lily Alldridge – Clinical Project Manager, and Rosa Tripodi-Plunkett – Director of Clinical Operations, to reflect on IWD – what it means to them, where we are today and what needs to stop, start and continue to accelerate progress in the workplace.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

Anzari

“My mum was one of the first female technicians in Fiji, where I grew up. I remember reading a newspaper clipping titled “Sushil in a man’s world” with a picture of my mum on a bike, and thinking how this title would create outrage (and rightfully so) today, but also the need for trailblazing women who pave the way for women to work in fields dominated by men. Her ambition, and message that women belong at the same table as men has been one of the driving forces behind my interest in STEM.

So, for me, International Women’s Day is about championing the unique skills and knowledge of women. It’s a day to think about how we can work towards dismantling or re-shaping systems to remove barriers for all women so we can gain equal access to education, employment pathways, financial services, and literacy, and ideally achieve equal participation in the economy. It’s a day that marks progress towards a gender-equal future.”

How can women support other women in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries?

Lily

“Firstly, mentorship plays a pivotal role. Sharing experiences, insights, and guidance can help navigate the complexities of the industry and inspire confidence in aspiring female professionals. I’ve been fortunate to have had mentors who generously shared their knowledge and provided invaluable support, and I strive to pay it forward by mentoring other women in the field.

Secondly, advocating for gender diversity and inclusion is crucial. Women can leverage their positions to amplify the voices of their female colleagues, champion their achievements, and push for policies that promote equity and fairness in the workplace. Whether it’s advocating for equal pay or ensuring representation on decision-making panels, advocating for each other is key to breaking down barriers.

Lastly, creating networks and spaces for collaboration is essential. Establishing forums where women can connect, share resources, and collaborate on projects fosters a sense of community and solidarity. By building strong networks, we can leverage each other’s strengths, navigate challenges collectively, and drive positive change in these industries”.

What are the benefits of having empowered women and female mentors in your organisation?

Sarah

“I’m lucky to work in an organisation that has a large number of women through all levels and sections of the business. I think this has played a large part in creating a collaborative working community, where support (either professional or personal) is readily available. Women bring different perspectives to the many challenges businesses face, and enable a range of viewpoints to be put forward when working through problems.

A business that actively demonstrates women can effectively contribute at all levels is a powerful message, especially to younger women starting their careers. It also provides a readily available range of role models and career guidance from women who have much experience to share.

Importantly, Accelagen also delivers on its commitment to providing flexibility to working parents and this is invaluable when aiming to keep women engaged and empowered in the workplace.”

Rosa

“The leadership team at Accelagen often lead by doing.  We approach all of our work by drawing from our own experience within the industry, as well our personal life. We try to provide positive and empowering mentorship to all of our staff and are particularly passionate about supporting the next generation of women in the Life sciences. This is particularly evident in our CRA training program, where junior staff are afforded the opportunity of mentorship by our senior staff members.

We are passionate about growing and promoting within our organisation, and demonstrated in our leadership team that it is unique and diverse in experiences as well as gender.”
