With a collective passion for high-quality database design and meticulous attention to detail, it’s time for you to learn a bit more about our work in this area and meet Accelagen’s expanding Biometrics team.

The Role of Biometrics in Clinical Research

Biometrics is the systematic collection and statistical analysis of data. It’s the backbone of translating complex information into actionable insights, guiding the development of new treatments and therapies. Merging science with statistics, it’s about turning the promise of research into the proof of results, ensuring that new therapeutics can confidently navigate the rigorous demands of regulatory approval and make their way into the hands of those who need them most.

Meeting an ever-evolving need

As the industry evolves, so too does the demand for sophisticated analyses. Accelagen is at the forefront of this shift, investing in our team and technologies to stay ahead of the curve.

We are often told that one of the things that makes Accelagen different is our deep love of what we do. This commitment to experience, expertise and values makes up our ‘trilogy of unity’ — the set of clear and deliberate principles we share around the goal of accelerating human health. This passion drives who we are and what we deliver, and assembling our Biometrics team has been no different.

A growing function within the business

Over the past few years, we have taken the time to recruit, hire and evolve ‘our kind’ of people who can translate research into quality data and be steadfast in their commitment to safer, more effective medical interventions for people from all backgrounds.

From comprehensive Statistical Consulting services to Biostatistics — our expert team drives study design, conduct, data collection, analysis, and reporting. This new Biometrics offering also extends to:

Led by a dynamic team

At the helm of our Biometrics team are individuals whose careers have been defined by a commitment to excellence, innovation, and putting people first. With backgrounds spanning clinical research, bioinformatics, and statistical programming, each member brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the table.

Hand-picking the best of the best, this team is capably led and managed by Dr Elisa Young — our Director of Biometrics and Data Governance. From Vivian to Tiaan and Emma — we have recruited a dynamic ensemble, composed of seasoned experts and visionary newcomers, which has fast become a cornerstone of our mission to redefine excellence in clinical research.

Meet some of our newest faces

Tiaan van der Spuy has over a decade of experience in statistical programming, consulting, and management, and has recently joined the team asa Senior Statistical Programmer. Originally from South Africa, and with extensive experience across the APAC region, Tiaan employs the same strategic acumen and a problem-solving mindset in his work as he does in his new hobby: chess.

Vivian Walker, our newly promoted Senior Clinical Data Manager, brings almost five years of experience in clinical trials. With a passion for helping and mentoring others, Vivian began her career with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in molecular biology and cellular biology. Vivian taught science and genetics in high schools and universities, before completing a licenced practical nursing program, while volunteering as a palliative care certified nursing assistant. After moving to Australia, she rediscovered her research and data roots, joining Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and now Accelagen in early 2023.

Emma Norris joined the team as a Clinical Database Developer in July 2023, with over 12 years’ experience in medical research, her role capitalises on her extensive programming background and advanced skills in clinical database development. She is also a committed mentor and a regular contributor to process improvement within the Biometrics services.

Creating real-world impact

The impact of the Biometrics team extends beyond data sheets and statistical models. Bringing years of experience and an unrivalled knowledge base, our Biometrics team ensures our regulatory frameworks, data management systems, and statistical analyses are optimised, values-driven and punching at a standard well above the industry benchmark.

Their work is also about humanising the data, connecting the dots between numbers and narratives. This team doesn’t just analyse; they empathise, understanding that behind every data point is a patient waiting for answers or a client with a problem to solve. It’s this people-first approach that sets Accelagen apart, blending scientific rigour with a heart for the humans at the centre of it all.

As Accelagen’s Biometrics team continues to grow, its role in the company’s success and in the broader landscape of clinical research has become increasingly critical. Setting a new standard for how data-driven insights can propel healthcare solutions forward, bridging the gap between raw data and practical, actionable knowledge that helps save lives.
